Climate Experts Welcome Royal Attendance
Environmental experts praised the royal's presence. One consultant stated that it would lift what is expected to be a difficult summit, where international consensus on new targets for cutting greenhouse gas emissions is essential.
"Does the Prince's presence at the summit a stunt? Yes. But it doesn't imply it's a poor decision," the expert commented. "Cop has historically been as much about what's termed 'optics' as it is about negotiations. The Prince's decision will almost certainly encourage other delegates to commit, and will attract international press."
"I believe HRH is fully aware that by attending, he'll bring countless of eyes to the summit. In an period when environmental effects are escalating, but press attention is declining, anything that highlights the issue should be welcomed."
Royal Attendance at Past Cops
King Charles has attended past Cops, but has decided not to be going in Cop30.
Support from Climate Organizations
A leader from a climate research unit commented: "Full participation is needed – and every high-profile figure like the Prince of Wales, in attendance helping make the case for the challenging job that is required, is almost certainly a good thing."
"[King Charles was in his previous role when he participated in the Glasgow summit and pitched in to motivate negotiations. I would argue it necessarily needs the two royals to participate."
PM's Attendance Still Uncertain
The PM has not yet said whether they will attend the meeting, to which every international officials are asked, with numerous planning to join. The leader was widely condemned by leading sustainability leaders for showing indecision on the decision in recent weeks.
"Global officials need to be in the summit location for the climate conference. Participation is not optional, it is a measure of commitment. This is the time to secure enhanced national commitments and the funding to implement them, especially for adaptation" to the effects of the environmental emergency.
"International observers is watching, and history will note who showed up."
